SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Georgia Southern Volleyball team (18-14, 10-6) wrapped up its 2011 regular season with a 3-0 win over Wofford (13-19, 2-13) at Converse College. The Eagles completed the three-game sweep 25-23, 26-24, 25-20 in a nip-and-tuck contest.
Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) and Enjoli Johnson (Lilburn, Ga.) powered GSU to a .350 hitting percentage with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. The Eagles survived a strong offensive match from the Terriers, who hit .310. Amanda Liguori led Wofford with 12 kills and also posted 12 digs on the defensive end.
Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) powered the Eagles' offense to two .400 plus sets with 35 assists. She also added eight digs on the defensive to go along with Moriah Bellissimo's (Blackstone, Va.) team-high 21 digs.
Georgia Southern rallied from a 18-12 deficit in the first half to win the first set 25-23. The Eagles .400 in the set and snapped a tie late in the game on a Wofford attack error. Kills by Johnson and Sanford set up a 25-23 first-set victory.
The Terriers did not give up in the second set but eventually fell 26-24. The Eagles hit .444 in the set behind six kills in eight attempts from Johnson.
Georgia Southern completed the sweep with a 25-20 third-set victory. It was not an easy task, surviving a late rally by Wofford. The Eagles committed three errors during the run but a kill by Sanford wrapped up the contest.
The Eagles return to action Saturday at the Southern Conference Tournament in Birmingham, Ala. The three-day tournament runs through Monday on the campus of Samford.
