Statesboro, Ga. - For Eagle golfer Will Evans, excelling in the classroom has been a priority for as long as he can remember. At Eagles Landing Christian Academy, Evans held a 4.0 grade point average and was named to the President's List.
"School has always been important to me," said the McDonough, Ga., native. "In high school, I took the classes that would best prepare me for college. They weren't always the easiest classes, but I worked hard to do the best I could."
The Eagle sophomore has adjusted well to college life, continuing his success in the classroom while working hard to improve his golf game.
"So much of golf is mental" said Evans. "Striking the ball well is only a part of it. You need to be able to manage the course and your round and not let one mistake become two or three. You also have to have confidence in yourself that you can go out there and put up low scores to help your team succeed."
Head Coach Larry Mays appreciates the example that Evans sets for his teammates and other student-athletes at Georgia Southern.
"Will displays all of the characteristics that make a great student athlete," said Mays. "He wants to be a strong contributor to this team while also being a good teammate. He is a hard worker on the course and in the classroom."
Georgia Southern Golf concluded the fall portion of its 2011-12 schedule on Tuesday with a third place finish at the Amelia National Intercollegiate, where Evans shot 225 (+9) to finish tied for 32nd in individual standings. The Eagles begin their spring schedule Feb. 11-12 when they travel to Gainesville, Florida for the Gator Invitational.
