STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Women's Soccer team wraps up a four-match homestand this weekend with a pair of games against Western Carolina and Appalachian State. The Eagles face the Catamounts on Friday, October 7th at 4 p.m. to close a soccer doubleheader at Eagle Field and return to action on Sunday, October 9th, at 2 p.m. against the Mountaineers.
The Eagles (2-7-2, 0-3-1 SoCon) closed out last weekend's two-pack of matches with a 0-0 draw against Elon. Goalkeeper Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.) made six saves on the afternoon for her second clean sheet of the season. Georgia Southern was buoyed by three shots from Courtney Collins (Mason, Ohio) and Christine Watts (Duluth, Ga.).
Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) paces the Georgia Southern offense as a spark plug off the bench with four goals this season. Collins shares the team lead with Murphy, scoring four goals as well this season.
The Catamounts (8-3-1, 3-1-0 SoCon) come into Friday's contest on a two-match winning streak after downing Wofford (2-1) and Furman (1-0, 2OT) last weekend. Western Carolina is a perfect 5-0-0 at home, but has had some difficulties on the road with a 3-3-1 record away from Cullowhee. Laura Greb and Samantha Hodge each have four goals to lead the Catamount offense.
Appalachian State (5-6-1, 1-2-1 SoCon) took a win over Wofford last weekend, but could only manage a draw against Furman as both contests went to double overtime. Julia Holz provides the scoring for the Mountaineers, scoring five goals this season. Goalkeeper Amy Kolowski kept both the Terriers and Paladins scoreless last weekend to preserve her third and fourth shutouts of the season and pick up SoCon Player of the Week honors.
Georgia Southern travels next Thursday to face The Citadel at 4 p.m. before closing the 2011 home schedule against College of Charleston on Sunday, October 16th at 2 p.m.
