STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Volleyball team plans to honor their seniors with a pair of weekend games against The Citadel and the College of Charleston this weekend. The Eagles will host Halloween at Hanner on Friday night against Charleston and will hold Senior Day on Saturday at 4 p.m. against The Citadel.
GSU is coming off a split last week's action against Samford and Chattanooga. The Eagles fell 3-1 to the Bulldogs but got a career-high 30 dig effort from Moriah Bellissimo (Blackstone, Va.) on defense. The Eagles were hindered by a .178 hitting percentage but four players had 10 or more kills in the contest.
Georgia Southern bounced back from the loss with a 3-0 sweep of Chattanooga. Nicole Jeschelnik (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) led the offense with 10 kills and tallied a .400 hitting percentage. GSU hit .324 in the first set and followed that up with a .414 mark in the second set. Jeschelnik also notched 10 digs on the defensive end.
The Citadel is still seeking its first Southern Conference victory and is 7-17, 0-10 this season. Coastal Carolina held the Bulldogs to a .111 hitting percentage in a non-conference match on Tuesday. Kaona Mercer tallied 11 kills and four blocks to lead the Bulldog attack in the match. Mercer also leads the team with 237 kills and 59 blocks.
College of Charleston leads the Southern Division with a 17-9, 8-2 record. Elyse Chubb leads the team with 270 kills, while two others Sloane White and Sarah Havel are also above 200 in the kills category. The Cougars are coming off a weekend sweep of Appalachian State and Western Carolina. They hit just .190 against the Mountaineers but pulled off a 3-0 win thanks to 13 team blocks. The defense was a big help in the 3-1 win over the Catamounts, tallying 104 digs to keep a number of long rallies alive.
