Volleyball Sweeps Citadel in First of Two Matches in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Behind 11 kills from Hannah Nelson (Norcross, Ga.) the Georgia Southern Volleyball team (10-8, 3-0) swept The Citadel 3-0 in the first of two games in Charleston. The Eagles will square off with one of the top teams in the Southern Conference, College of Charleston, tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Nelson paced GSU's offensive attack and tied with Rachael Farrell of The Citadel for the game high. Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) was second on the team with 10 kills. Sanford did not commit an error on offense and tallied six digs on the defensive end. Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) tallied 41 of the team's 46 assists to help power the team to a .365 attack percentage.
The Eagles opened the match with a .379 hitting percentage in the first set to win 25-18. Georgia Southern followed that up with sets of .365 and .353 to win 25-17 in the second set and 25-18 in the third set.
The Eagle defense held the Bulldogs to a .184 hitting percentage. Lauren LaRocque (Frisco, Texas) led the team with 10 digs and helped Georgia Southern hold The Citadel to just a .036 hitting percentage in the first set.
Georgia Southern returns to the court tomorrow at the College of Charleston. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Charleston.
