Eagles Handle Tigers, 3-0, in Home Opener

STATESBORO, Ga. – In the home opener for the Georgia Southern Volleyball team, the Eagles handled Savannah State for a 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-14) victory Monday evening in Hanner Fieldhouse. The win pushed Georgia Southern to 3-4 overall this season, while dropping Savannah State to 1-5.
Leading the offensive effort for the Eagles was Hannah Nelson (Norcross, Ga.) with seven kills, while freshmen Enjoli Johnson (Lilburn, Ga.) and Nicole Jeschelnik (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) added six kills each. Sophomore setter Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) posted a match-high 20 assists, while also leading the team in digs, recording six.
Savannah State was held to a -.087 hitting percentage led by Keandra Lewis and Bryana Gadis, each contributing four kills.
“I thought we were up and down at times, but overall we played well. We got off to a rough start and then steadied out. We finished all our sets well, but I would like to see us start off a little stronger,” stated Head Coach Chad Callihan. “I was real pleased with our freshmen this evening. I thought Enjoli [Johnson] had a nice match and Nicole [Jeschelnik] had a very solid all-around game for us up until a couple unforced hitting errors at the end.”
Savannah State opened each frame taking the early lead, but Georgia Southern finished strong completing the sweep over the Tigers.
After falling behind 2-0 in the opening set, the Eagles surged ahead taking a 4-3 lead. Four unanswered Eagle points put Georgia Southern in front, 8-4, before the Tigers pulled the score to 9-7 following an Eagle service error. The Tigers called a timeout at 17-11 before Georgia Southern capped the opening set with an 8-2 run highlighted by two Jeschelnik kills.
Nelson mashed four kills in the second frame leading the Eagles to a 25-12 victory. Again, Savannah State opened the set strong, taking a 4-1 lead out of the gate. But the Eagles responded using a 10-0 run capped by three service aces from Ashley Roe (Campbell, Calif.) to take an 11-4 lead. The Eagles continued the strong offensive attack, closing out the set, 25-12, hitting .318 in the frame.
The third set followed the same pattern, as Savannah State took an early 3-1 lead followed by a 7-0 Georgia Southern run to take the lead, 8-3. The Eagles closed out the match on a 4-0 run, all coming off Tiger errors, to secure the match with a 25-14 victory. Nelson recorded three kills in the frame while hitting at a .750 clip, and Johnson posted two kills for a .500 hitting efficiency.
Georgia Southern returns to action this weekend at the NC State Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. Action kicks off Friday, September 10 against host NC State at 7 p.m. The Eagles close out the tournament on Saturday facing Morehead State at 11 a.m. and Mercer at 5:30 p.m.
The Eagles then return home to host the SpringHill Suites Invitational, Sept. 16-18.
