STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Volleyball Eagles reported to campus on Thursday and hit the gym early Friday morning for the first official practice of the 2010 season. The first couple weeks of preseason camp will feature intense practices, drills, weights and other team building activities to enhance the team camaraderie before the first match on August 27 against UT Martin, part of the War Eagle Invitational hosted by Auburn.
Preseason camp began with a team dinner Thursday night to introduce the three newcomers. Then camp got underway first thing Friday morning. The Eagles opened the season in the back gym, Old Hanner, where the team got down to basics.
The first practice focused on basic skill assessment and improvement. “We worked on a lot of ball control and just basic passing and defensive movements,” said Head Coach Chad Callihan. “We'll get into more of our offensive and defensive systems over the next couple of days. But right now we're just getting the kids acclimated and communicating with one another, and just getting some of our basic footwork patterns down.”
With the addition of three newcomers to a roster filled with 11 returning letterwinners, the Eagles enter the season with 14. The first practice was a chance to see the newcomers in action and for them to get their first feel of collegiate volleyball.
“I thought the newcomers fit in fine. I think they're doing a good job of having an open mind and listening,” stated Callihan. “I think that some of the older kids are doing a good job of pulling them aside when we're not practicing and talking them through some things, which is always nice to see. It helps them get acclimated a little easier. But overall, I thought they did well for the first practice.”
The energy and enthusiasm the Eagles brought to the court made the opening practice a productive one. “I think our first practice was good. It was just nice to get everyone back in the gym. Everybody was eager to get started, which is always nice,” Callihan noted. “I think the girls had a good summer and were excited to get back out and get at it again.”
The first full week of preseason camp will witness two-a-days and weight training sessions before classes start on August 16. The Eagles will hit the court with early morning and late afternoon practice sessions, intermixed with weight training visits to Iron Works.
