Eagles Fall 4-0 At Mercer To Open Season

MACON, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Soccer Team dropped its first game of the season 4-0 against Mercer Sunday afternoon at Bear Field in Macon, Ga. Georgia Southern is 0-1-0 on the season, while Mercer starts 2010 1-0-0.
The Bears struck first, breaking down the Eagle defense for a goal in 10th minute by Sara Elliott. Lizzy Shaughnessy started the play, hitting Casey Barrett from midfield. Barrett sent the ball from the right corner to the top of the box, finding Elliott, who beat Georgia Southern goalkeeper Missy Meyer (Alpharetta, Ga.) in the right side of the net.
The Bears found the back of the net for the second time in the 17th minute, when Emily Milone collected a rebound off a corner kick and found the top-right corner of the goal from 25 yards out.
The Eagles appeared to cut the lead in half when Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) headed a corner kick off the foot of Carlee Storey (Medford, Ore.) into the net in the 32nd minute, but the goal was disallowed because of a foul called on the Eagles.
Milone scored her second goal of the game in the 64th minute, beating Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.), who relieved Meyer at the start of the second half. Four minutes later, Lauren Johnson pushed the lead to 4-0 when she buried a rebound off a corner kick.
Georgia Southern was only able to get three shots off, while Mercer took nine shots, placing seven on frame. Meyer recorded two saves, while Merson had one.
The Eagles are on the road again on Saturday, Aug. 28, when they take on USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. The Game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
