STATESBORO, Ga. - The Eagle Golf team was awarded All-Academic team honors, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Georgia Southern joins 112 other teams that submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher to earn All-Academic Team recognition. "Being a student is the first priority of an student-athlete, so I'm very proud of our players for their scholastic attainments," said Head Coach Larry Mays. "Our spring semester GPA was a 3.53, the highest GPA for a semester since I've been here.
Cleveland/Srixon All-America Scholars Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.), Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) and Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) led the way for the Eagles in pursuit of the team's academic honors. "Having three guys on the All-America Scholar list is a testament to their hard work inside the classroom and on the golf course," said Mays.
Georgia Southern tied with six other schools for the most Division I All-America scholars on the list. "For our team to be one of seven teams with the most players on the list is a great accomplishment for our program," stated Mays. "To be eligible for that honor you have to be a junior or senior and play in 70 percent of the tournaments, so it's a great example of how committed they are to being a student-athlete."
Georgia Southern is one of only 64 Division I teams to earn the honor. Davidson and Wofford joined Georgia Southern in representing the Southern Conference on the All-Academic Team list.
To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors a college or university must submit the grade point average earned and hours attempted for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.
