Three Eagles named to Cleveland/Srixon All-America Scholars List

NORMAN, Okla. - Seniors Spence Fulford, Matt Deal and junior Logan Blondell were named to the Cleveland/Srixon All-America Scholars list, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America today (July 12). The Eagle trio joins 116 other Division I collegiate golfers in receiving the honor.
Fulford, Blondell and Deal helped propel Georgia Southern to a tie with six other schools for the most players represented by a Division I collegiate golf program on the All-America Scholars list.
Senior Spence Fulford earned this elite recognition for the second time in his collegiate golf career. Fulford earned the honor last year as a junior with a 3.61 GPA. This past season, Fulford was second on the team in stroke average with a 73.62. His second round 9-under 63 at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate in September set a new tournament and competitive course record and helped the Eagles win the tournament. Fulford's 63 tied three other players for the all-time lowest round in Georgia Southern history. The Rocky Mount, N.C., native's 3.69 GPA in management was the highest among Eagle golfers and earlier this month he was selected to his third Southern Conference Academic All-Conference team. Fulford was selected the Male Scholar Athlete at Georgia Southern for 2009-10.
Logan Blondell, a junior from Lakeland, Fla., earned the honor for the first time with a 3.56 GPA in finance and financial service. Blondell finished the season with a 74.35 stroke average, fifth best on the team. His best performance occurred at the NCAA Southeast Regional where he fired a 2-under par 208 for second place and tied his 54-hole career low. Blondell was also a Southern Conference Academic All-Conference selection.
Also earning his first All-America Scholar honor was senior Matt Deal who boasted a 3.37 GPA in finance this year. His 75.00 stroke average was sixth-best on the team. Deal's best finish of the season came at the Southern Conference Championship where he tied for 19th. His second round 2-under 70 at the Augusta State Invitational set a new career-low and also helped him card a 54-hole career-low 208. The Statesboro native was also recognized by the Southern Conference as an Academic All-Conference selection.
The trio helped the Eagles lead the Southern Conference on the Cleveland/Srixon All-America Scholars list. Fellow SoCon members Elon, Furman and Chattanooga each had one player earning All-America Scholar honors while two golfers from Wofford were recognized on the list.
A total of 119 players in Division I, 55 in Division II and four in NAIA earned the honor of All-America Scholar. To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status in Division I an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70 percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
