Eagles Prepare for NCAA Southeast Regional

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern University men's golf team is making its final preparations for the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional this week. The Eagles will contend for advancement into the NCAA Men's Golf Championship at the Capital City Crabapple Golf Club, May 20-22, in Alpharetta, Ga.
“We will work hard all week in preparation for the tournament,” said head coach Larry Mays. “We'll get some practice in on similar golf courses, shift them into par 70s, and get the team acclimated to the style of course we'll be playing on. It does make a little bit of difference in your mentality to approach a par 70 course, so we'll work on that.”
A Tom Fazio design, the Crabapple Golf Club opened in 2002 and is a par 72, 7,137-yard championship-style course. But for the NCAA Regional, the course will be played as a par 70 and will run 7,182 yards from the back tees.
In order of their respective seedings, the Southeast Regional will consist of Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Arkansas, Wake Forest, Mississippi, Furman, Brigham Young, Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina, South Alabama and Towson.
In addition to the 13 teams, 10 individuals will be on hand in Alpharetta, Ga. competing for the single individual spot to advance to the championship.
“In any Regional, you have to play well to advance no matter what seed you are,” stated Mays. “It is important for us to take care of our business and not worry about the other teams. That's our mindset going in.”
Following a practice round on Wednesday, competition for the first two rounds will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday and Friday, with the final round on Saturday teeing off at 7:30 a.m. The top five teams and top individual, not on a qualifying team, in each region, advance to the NCAA Championships to be held June 1-6 on The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Comprising the travel roster for Georgia Southern will be Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.), Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria), Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.), Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.).
The quintet features two Eagles with postseason experience in Blondell and Fulford, who both competed in the 2009 NCAA Regional. Fulford finished fifth in the field and missed an individual advancement by one stroke. Blondell finished the tournament in a tie for 38th with an even 213.
Georgia Southern, paired with Coastal Carolina and South Alabama in the opening round, will tee off on the back nine beginning at 9:10 a.m. on Thursday, May 20. Teams and individuals will be re-paired according to score after the first and second rounds.
“When this team plays well, we can compete with anyone in the country,” noted Mays. “We will take advantage of the practice round on Wednesday to map out the course and formulate a game plan. For us to do well, we need to keep our confidence level high and effectively execute our game plan.”
The Last Time…
The postseason nod marks the second consecutive and eighth in Mays' 10-year tenure at Georgia Southern. When Mays took over the storied program in 2001, the Eagles made a return trip to postseason play for the first time since 1989. Of the seven trips to regionals under Mays, Georgia Southern has advanced three times with the last Championship appearance occurring in 2005. Before the 1989 regional format was instituted, GS took part in eight NCAA Championships.
Conference Honors…
Following the conclusion of the 2010 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship, both Ryan Zabroske and Florian Sander received conference recognition. Zabroske was named to the All-SoCon Team, while Sander picked up All-Freshman honors.
