STATESBORO, Ga. (Georgia Southern) - The Georgia Southern softball team bounced back from a 7-4 extra-inning loss in game one to take game two 3-1 over College of Charleston on a rain-soaked Eagle Field Saturday (April 24).
The Eagles (23-23, 8-8 Southern Conference) took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the first inning of game two when senior Jenny Side (Loganville, Ga.) reached on an error, allowing Sophomore Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) to score from third.
The Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-RBI single by junior Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.), scoring Fogle and freshman Sara Hinchman (Douglasville, Ga.). College of Charleston (21-21, 8-8 SoCon) scored one in the top of the sixth before junior Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) came in to close the door.
Streetmon earned her third save of the season, pitching 1.1 innings of hitless softball with one strikeout. Smith (6-13) earned the win, giving up just one run on four hits with two strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Alexa Datko (5-10) took the loss for the Cougars, giving up three runs, one earned, on six hits in 5.2 innings.
In its tenth extra inning game of the season, Georgia Southern fell 7-4 to College of Charleston in eight innings in the longest softball game of the season, lasting two hours and 56 minutes.
Kelley Dillon hit her second home run of the game to lead off the eighth inning, and Kristie Shifflett drove in two runs with a single up the middle to give the Cougars a 7-4 lead.
The Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, and freshman Tabby Douberley (Clyo, Ga.) brought the crowd to their feet with a deep drive to left-center, but leftfielder Amanda Lonergan caught it on the warning track to end the game.
The Cougars struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI-triple by Lonergan, and held the lead until the Eagles tied it in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI-single by Smith scoring senior Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.). Charleston plated three unearned runs in the top of the sixth, including two on a home run by Dillon, to retake the lead.
Georgia Southern retied the game in the bottom of the sixth scoring three. Sophomore Hanna Ennis (Snellville, Ga.) started the rally with a two-run home run, and Iduate drove in sophomore Stephanie Peet (Lawrencevill, Ga.), who was pinch running for sophomore Mackenzie Williams (Baxley, Ga.).
The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single by senior Sam Russo (Snellville, Ga.), but couldn't push the winning run across.
Smith was charged with the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Streetmon started the game, allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Stephanie Saylors (5-2) earned the win for the Cougars, holding the Eagles scoreless on three hits with a strikeout and a walk in three innings of relief.
Iduate went 5-for-9 with a run scored and an RBI, Smith was 3-for-7 with three RBIs and a walk, and senior Kelly Burnett (Boynton Beach, Fla.) went 2-for-6 with a run scored and a walk. Russo also had multiple hits on the day, going 2-for-5. Ennis finished 2-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored on her second home run of the season.
