Georgia Southern Volleyball Sweeps The Citadel 3-0

STATESBORO, Ga. – Backed by double-digit kill performances from middle hitter Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) and right side hitter Hannah Nelson (Norcross, Ga.), the Georgia Southern Volleyball team swept The Citadel 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-13) to extend its winning streak to 10 matches and remain undefeated in Hanner Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Eagles have now won 19 of their last 20 matches and improve to 22-7 (12-1 SoCon).
“I felt really good about what we did this evening,” said Georgia Southern Head Coach Chad Callihan. “I thought we did a great job of staying in our system throughout the night and it was a good effort by the kids.”
Small recorded 13 kills, her 20th double-digit kill match of the season, and hit .667 with three block assists, while Nelson's 12 kills mark her 10th double-digit kill performance of the year. The junior hit a team-leading .857 in the three-set victory.
Junior setter Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) dished out 34 assists, and had nine digs and three block assists, part of five total blocks for the Eagles. GSU held the Bulldogs to a .065 hitting percentage in the contest, forcing 17 attack errors.
“We've seen growth throughout the season,” Callihan noted, “and that's been our goal; to make sure we continue to grow and that we're peaking at the end of the season for the conference tournament.”

Nelson led the Eagles through the opening frame with a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage and seven kills, helping GSU to a .571 team attack average. Four different Eagles recorded block assists, including Van Dyke, who also tallied 14 assists.
The Citadel played it close in the first half of the game, knotting the set at 11-all before the Eagles used a 14-5 scoring run to pick up the win with 25-16 final score.
Set Two: Georgia Southern 25, The Citadel 12
Georgia Southern took the lead early in the second set, using an eight-point scoring streak to pull ahead 10-2. GSU finished the frame with a 25-12 advantage to take the lead 2-0 in the match.
The Eagle defense held the Bulldogs to just five kills in the set and forced a -.043 hitting percentage. Van Dyke added two block assists and another 13 assists to her score sheet. Offensively, freshman middle hitter Enjoli Johnson (Lilburn, Ga.) had four kills to lead GSU, while Small and Nelson each recorded three.

Small posted nearly half of her offense in the third frame, knocking down six kills and two service aces. A pair of 6-0 scoring drives, each aided by a pair of kills from Small, helped the Eagles put the match away. GSU took a 25-13 final-set score to claim the victory.
The Eagles return to action Saturday evening, facing College of Charleston in a 7 p.m. first serve.
