Eagles Extend Winning Streak with 3-1 Win at North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Behind a 15-kill, 10-dig performance from junior Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.), Georgia Southern rolled to a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16) win over North Florida Tuesday night in non-conference volleyball action, extending its winning streak to nine matches. The outing marks Sanford's 17th double-double of the season.
Junior hitters and Lauren Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.) and Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) posted 10 kills apiece for GSU, while libero Ashley Roe (Campbell, Calif.) recorded 24 digs, as the Eagles improve to 21-7 on the year.
“This evening we came out a little flat, and I have to give credit to UNF for playing with great defensive intensity,” said Georgia Southern Head Coach Chad Callihan. “Our play picked up as the match wore on and we began to find a nice rhythm in the fourth set. Lauren Claybaugh played a very good match for us and really showed her versatility as an attacker this evening.”
Georgia Southern has now won 18 of its last 19 matches dating back to September 11th.
Set One: Georgia Southern 25, North Florida 22
Sophomore Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) dished out a team-high nine kills and also led the squad with five digs to put the Eagles on top 25-22 after the first frame. Small and freshman Enjoli Johnson (Lilburn, Ga.) each recorded a block solo as GSU took a 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles never trailed in the set, leading by as many as six in the early goings, and kept the Ospreys at bay with at least a two-point lead through the remainder of the frame.
Set Two: North Florida 25, Georgia Southern 23
Despite a team .375 hitting percentage in the second set, the Eagles couldn't stop the Ospreys (5-21). GSU led 21-18 toward the end of the game, but UNF rattled off five of the next six points to take the lead 23-22.
Sanford picked up five kills in the game and Van Dyke added another 10 kills to her ledger, but North Florida evened the match at one-all with a 25-23 win.
Set Three: Georgia Southern 25, North Florida 22
Four team blocks and eight digs from Roe helped the Eagle defense hold UNF to a .067 hitting percentage in set number three. A Hannah Nelson (Norcross, Ga.) kill knotted the frame at 20-all and Georgia Southern scored the next four points to pull ahead 24-20, picking up the set with a 25-22 final score.
Set Four: Georgia Southern 25, North Florida 16
The Eagles forced a North Florida error to break a 3-3 tie early and never looked back as Small posted five kills and Roe added six digs to help Georgia Southern close out the match with a 25-16 win. GSU rolled on through the fourth frame, hitting .364 as a squad and holding the Ospreys to just .132 at the net.
