STATESBORO, Ga. – After posting a 14-2 regular season mark in league play, the Georgia Southern volleyball team secured the No. 2 seed in the South Division and will face tournament host Appalachian State, the No. 3 seed from the North, in the first round of the 2010 Southern Conference Volleyball Championship Friday night in Boone, N.C.
The Eagles and Mountaineers (18-11, 9-7 SoCon) will play the final match of the day on the opening day of the tournament, with first serve slated for 7 p.m. at the Holmes Convocation Center.
“We are really excited to have the opportunity to compete for this year's championship,” said GSU head coach Chad Callihan. “I think our group felt very disappointed not having the opportunity to play in last season's tournament and I believe that has helped them understand that we better make the most of this opportunity.”
Georgia Southern met Appalachian State one time this season, a match the Eagles won 3-1 (25-17, 27-29, 25-21, 25-17) in Boone on October 24.
In that meeting, Nicole Jeschelnik (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) led GSU with 16 kills, part of a three-match effort that earned her SoCon Freshman of the Week honors. Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) and Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) also reached double figures, tallying 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
Three Eagles recorded four block assists apiece, helping Georgia Southern to 10 total blocks as a team, and four different Eagles posted double-digit digs, led by libero Ashley Roe's (Campbell, Calif.) 21.
“It will be a great test playing the home team in Appalachian State,” Callihan added. “The Mountaineers have the luxury of gaining valuable experience in the tournament last year. We are motivated and know we will have to execute well against a good ASU squad.”
Sanford enters the tournament averaging a team-leading 3.38 kills per set, which ranks second in the SoCon, while Small's .386 hitting percentage paces GSU and the league in the category.
Sophomore setter Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) is dishing out 10.68 assists per set, tops on the team and in the conference.
Winner of Friday night's match will face the winner of No. 1 (N) Elon vs. No. 4 (S) Davidson at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the semifinal round.
