CULLOWHEE, N.C. - After a scoreless first half, Western Carolina took advantage of scoring chances in the second period to take a 2-0 win over the Georgia Southern Women's Soccer team Friday night.
"The first half was fairly even," said Eagles Head Coach Ashley Hart. "We had some opportunities in the second half, but we made some mistakes as a team. There are no easy games in the Southern Conference and to Western Carolina's credit, they did a good job of finishing the opportunities that they had."
Western Carolina's second-leading scorer, Laura Greb headed the ball into the goal off a throw-in by Katie Weigel for the Catamounts' first goal. Greb had half of the Catamounts' shots on goal for the night and her goal broke the tie in the 57th minute. Christine Kaznowski provided a cross to Emily Lynn for the second Western goal in the 76th minute.
The Eagles spread their shots around, with six different Georgia Southern players taking a shot on goal. Catamount goalkeeper Caitlin Williams protected the net and had six saves. Western improved its record to 4-7-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the league. Georgia Southern's Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.) recorded six saves.
Georgia Southern (5-7-1, 2-3 SoCon) continues its road trip this weekend with a match at Appalachian State Sunday at 2 p.m. The Mountaineers (3-5-3, 0-2-2 SoCon) played host to Davidson Friday night in a conference matchup.
