Accurate Shooting Lifts Eagles Over Elon 2-1 on Road Sunday

ELON, N.C. - The Georgia Southern Women's Soccer team evened its Southern Conference record with a 2-1 win at Elon (7-4-1, 2-2-0 SoCon) Sunday (October 3), improving to 2-2-0 in league play and 5-6-0 overall.
Sophomore Morgan Springer (Mandeville, La.) scored her first goal of the season, coming through with the game-winner in the 60th minute on an assist by freshman Lindsay Hammer (Evans, Ga.).
The Eagles scored first with a goal from Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio), her second of the season, in the eight minute with an assist by Jenny Anderson (Birmingham, Ala.).
Brittany Hallberg even the match for Elon in the 20th minute, scoring on the rebound after Kendall Stanley's shot hit the post. Elon out-shot the Eagles 19-4, but freshman Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.) saved a season-high seven shots to give Georgia Southern the win.
The Eagles took four shots, putting all four on goal, but Elon goalkeeper Kristen Haney was only able to make two saves. Both saves came on shots by Southern Conference leading goal scorer Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.), who has seven goals on the season.
Georgia Southern will take on Western Carolina on Friday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. in Cullowhee, N.C., in the third game of the four game road trip.
