Volleyball Set to Welcome Furman and Wofford

STATESBORO, Ga. – The owners of a perfect 9-0 mark at home, Georgia Southern returns to Hanner Fieldhouse welcoming Furman Thursday at 6 p.m. and Wofford Saturday at 7 p.m. The Eagles own a 9-1 Southern Conference record and 18-7 overall mark in 2010.
Georgia Southern leads the league in hitting percentage (.267), assists (12.39 aps) and kills (13.31 kps), while boasting the individual leaders in hitting percentage in Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) with a .421 percentage and assists in Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) with a 10.62 assists per set average.
The Eagles took three of four weekly Southern Conference awards when Van Dyke earned Offensive Player of the Week and Student-Athlete of the Week and Nicole Jeschelnik (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) received Freshman Player of the Week.
Georgia Southern is coming off a 3-0 road swing defeating Davidson, Western Carolina and Appalachian State, moving its win streak to six consecutive. Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) leads the team with a 3.46 kills per set average. Ashley Roe (Campbell, Calif.) defends the backcourt with a 4.07 digs per set average and Van Dyke leads the team with a 10.62 assists per set average.
Furman (13-9, 7-3) has won four of its past five matches most recently defeating Chattanooga 3-2. Chandler Ambrester paces the Paladin offense with 3.09 kills per set, while Sarah McCarthy owns a 6.64 assists per set average. Elle Ross leads the defense sporting a 3.01 digs per set average.
Georgia Southern defeated Furman in the first match of the season by a 3-2 decision. Sanford and Small combined for 34 kills to lead the team. Roe picked up 26 digs, while Van Dyke recorded 50 assists. Furman leads the all-time series 28-15.
Wofford (12-16, 2-8) enters Saturday's match on a four-match losing streak. The Terriers most recently fell to Samford, 3-0. Three Terriers lead the offense averaging over three kills a set and are fueled by Bekah Dorsey who owns a 5.44 assists per set average. With a 3.96 digs per set average, Reagan Styles leads the defense.
The Eagles defeated the Terriers on the road earlier this season, 3-2. Five Eagles posted double-digit kill performances led by Sanford with 18. With the win, the Eagles now lead the all-time series 23-6.
Thursday's match against Furman has been designated as the annual Dig Pink match. All fans are asked to wear pink in support of breast cancer. Donations will be accepted prior to and during the match in the lobby of Hanner Fieldhouse.
Meanwhile, Saturday's match against Wofford will be Halloween costume night and anyone who attends the match wearing a costume will receive free admission. Also, any fan who presents a ticket from Saturday's football game against Samford will receive free admission into the match. The third installment of Head Coach Chad Callihan's Chalk Talk will also take place on Saturday.
