Eagles Fall at College of Charleston, 2-0

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – With a 1-0 lead at the half, College of Charleston added a goal in the second half to defeat Georgia Southern 2-0 Sunday afternoon (October 17) at Patriots Point. The Eagles (5-10-0, 2-6-0) had one shot on goal, while the Cougars (7-9-0, 4-4-0) collected six shots on frame.
Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.) picked up her first of four saves in the match at the 8:01 mark on a shot from Hope Atkinson. Meanwhile, the Eagles' lone shot on goal in the match occurred at 23:56 in the opening half as McKenna Storey (Medford, Ore.) registered her fifth shot on goal this season.
On only the Cougars' second shot of the afternoon, Sarah Schaidle broke through for the goal and a 1-0 lead. Swat Dash delivered a pass through the defense, setting up Schaidle's goal from 11-yards out for her seventh goal of the season.
There was little action the remainder of the first period as the teams combined for only two more shots before the break. Both teams saw only three shots each in the opening 45 minutes.
In the 58th minute, Hannah Gmerek set up a pass from the left touchline allowing Hope Atkinson to find the back of the net for the fifth time this season. The goal gave Charleston the final 2-0 margin of the meeting.
Georgia Southern was limited to only one shot in the second half in the 79th minute from Courtney Collins (Mason, Ohio).
The Cougars posted a 13-4 shot advantage, including 10 in the second half. Merson made three saves in the second half for the Eagles.
Georgia Southern closed out the road portion of its 2010 schedule and returns home for three consecutive matches beginning on Oct. 22 with Chattanooga. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
