Eagle Golf Set to Compete in 16th Annual Adams Cup of Newport

STATESBORO, GA – The Georgia Southern golf team is set to battle 18 teams for the 16th annual Adams Cup of Newport title, September 21-22. The University of Rhode Island will host the two-day tournament contested on the par 72, 7,244-yard Orchard Course at Newport National Golf Club.
“The Adams Cup of Newport is a great tournament, played on a great golf course and the University of Rhode Island does a great job hosting the teams,” said Eagle head coach Larry Mays. “Every year we try to take the team to different parts of the country to broaden their experience playing in different atmospheres and this tournament will certainly be one of those opportunities for them.”
Comprising the 18-team field will be: Brown, Bryant, Central Florida, Connecticut, DePaul, Francis Marion, Furman, Hartford, Georgia Southern, New Mexico, Ohio State, Saint Joseph's, Southern Methodist, Southern Mississippi, Temple, William & Mary and host Rhode Island, who will play two teams; or 17 schools from 11 different conferences.
“The field has some strong regional competitors that we don't normally see in our consistent schedule, which makes it a neat cultural experience for our guys who get to travel to a new part of the country and experience the Northeast culture,” said Mays.
Set to take the course for the Eagles will be the SpringHill Suites championship team of Logan Blondell, Spencer Fulford, Joe Monte, Florian Sander and Ryan Zabroske. En route to defending the Eagles' title at the SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate, Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) set the single round tournament and competitive course record firing a second-round 9-under 63. In addition to setting the tournament record, Fulford's 63 tied the Georgia Southern all-time lowest round in program history. The senior became only the fourth Eagle to own a 63, and first since 2001, since the inception of golf at Georgia Southern in 1971.
For the tournament, Fulford tied for third carding a tournament total 208. Appearing in his first collegiate tournament as an Eagle, redshirt-freshman Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) owned two of the three lowest rounds for Georgia Southern. Sander tied for ninth sandwiching opening and closing rounds of 68 and 69, respectively, with a second-round 76.
Also tying for ninth and collecting his first 'Top 10' finish of the 2009-2010 season was junior Blondell. The Lakeland, Fla., native bookended 72s around a second-round 3-under par 69. Sander and Blondell completed the tournament at 3-under 213. Fellow teammate Monte (Chantilly, Va.) finished in a tie for 30th with a three-round total 217. Completing the lineup, senior Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) carded a tournament-total 220 to stand in a tie for 42nd.
“We head into this tournament looking to ride our momentum coming off a win at SpringHill Suites. We feel we've erased our sub-standard performance in the Iowa tournament that got us off to the wrong foot. The win turned the team around and hopefully we can keep our momentum going in Newport,” stated Mays. “We aren't game-planning against the other teams, we are simply game-planning against the golf course, and hopefully we can go up there, play well and come home with some more hardware.”
