STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern women's soccer team (0-1) is set to play in the D.C. Invitational this weekend. The Eagles will take on American (Aug 28) and Georgetown (Aug 30) in the nation's capital.
"We play two very good teams in the tournament. It will be a chance for us to see right away what strengths our team has and what areas we need to improve on," said head coach Ashley Hart.
GSU is coming off of a close 2-1 loss to Charleston Southern in the season opener. Newcomer Krystin Smith (Acworth, Ga.) scored the Eagle's lone goal off of a pass from Danae Kaimuloa (Escondido, Calif.) in the second half. Georgia Southern's All-Time saves leader, Lauren Santos (Berwyn, Ill.), tallied eight more saves in her first start of the season.
First up for in the Invitational is the host team American (0-1). The Eagles dropped their first match of the season to Georgetown 2-0 (Aug 22). American recorded five shots on goal but were unable to come up with a goal. The Hoyas (1-0), who GSU will face on Sunday, recorded a goal in each half and out-shot American 17-7.
Game times for this weekend's matches are set for Friday against American at 3:30 pm and Sunday against Georgetown at noon.
