STATESBORO, Ga. - Women's Soccer will look to get things started off on the right foot for the whole athletic department in the first competition of the season on August 22nd against Charleston Southern.
"I feel like everyone has been working hard, and I am excited for the upcoming season," said head coach Ashley Hart.
Georgia Southern will feature 11 freshmen this season and will look for their senior leaders to help bring the youth along.
"We are really young this year, but we have four seniors with a lot of experience on the team. Their experience is really valuable for us, and we want them to step up and lead this team," said Hart.
The Eagles return their senior goalkeeper, Lauren Santos (Berwyn, Ill.). She started all 18 games last season and recorded a 1.83 goals against average. Santos is also GSU's all-time saves leader.
"Lauren Santos is invaluable to us. She is our goalkeeper and has played almost every minute of every game since she has been here. We are going to rely on her communication in the backfield," said Hart.
The Eagles are excited for Danae Kaimuloa's (Escondio, Calif.) sophomore season. Kaimuloa started all 18 games and recorded five goals and tallied three assists. She earned All-SoCon Second Team honors as a freshman.
"We are really excited about Danae. She is only a sophomore, but she had a great year for us last year, and we are expecting more of the same from her.
The Eagles hold the all-time mark in the series with a 9-7 record and are 8-7 in season openers.
The Buccaneers finished fourth in the Big South a year ago and tallied a 9-6-4 overall record. The Buccaneers return eight starters including senior Sarah Catenacci.
Women's soccer's first match of the year is set to kick off at 4 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
