STATESBORO, GA – The Georgia Southern volleyball team hit the courts for the first week of camp in Hanner Fieldhouse last week. Second-year head coach Chad Callihan was pleased with the team's positive energy in pre-season.
“It's been a good pre-season. The girls have come in with a lot of energy day in and day out. Our efforts have been good throughout camp so far,” said Callihan. “We still have some things we need to work on technically, but the attitudes have been great and I think that's really going to allow us to continue to grow.”
As the new academic year got underway today (August 17), the team will help the newcomers transition into the college atmosphere and return to the court to focus on the upcoming season.
“It will probably take us a day or two to get acclimated to the schedule and get our freshmen used to their class schedules. Once we get them settled in, we can focus on the volleyball court and really spend a lot of time on our ball control and first ball contact,” said Callihan.
The five newcomers who joined the squad for the 2009 season have shown their talent early on. Callihan was excited to see the team chemistry building.
“I'm real pleased with all our returners and their attitudes. The work ethic has been very good and as for the newcomers, I think Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, KS) has been doing a nice job setting. She is a pretty accomplished player and has definitely hit the ground running,” stated Callihan. “She has done a nice job early in camp for us.”
