Eagles Set to Compete in Administaff ASU Invite

STATESBORO, GA ? The Georgia Southern golf team will compete in its final regular season tournament this weekend at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational. The 54-hole event will be played Saturday and Sunday, April 4-5, at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
The Eagles will look for their second title in Augusta on the Par-72, 7,231-yard Donald Ross-designed golf course. The 2-day event begins Saturday morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The final round will be played on Sunday, April 5 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
The 17-team field includes nine teams ranked in the top 50 of the nation. Tennessee enters the tournament as the highest-ranked team, standing at No. 12 in the nation. Georgia Southern jumped to No. 41 in the latest Golfweek/Saragin Rankings after a sixth place finish at the 30th Annual Shenkel E-Z Go Invitational in a field of 18 nationally ranked teams. Joining host ASU and Georgia Southern in the field are Central Florida, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Coastal Carolina, Duke, Georgia State, Houston, Kent State, Lamar, Minnesota, North Carolina, USC Aiken, Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia Tech.
“There are some very good teams in the field. It runs in the pattern of most of the fields we've played in this spring,” said head coach Larry Mays. “Obviously Augusta playing at home in their tournament is going to be tough to beat. It should be a good test of golf for us and hopefully we will get up there and mix it up with the best of them.”
Set to compete for the Eagles are Logan Blondell, Drew Lethem, Joe Monte, Jordan Johnstun and Ryan LeFevre ? or three seniors and two sophomores. Joining the team in Augusta on an individual basis is junior Spencer Fulford.
Blondell finished tied for 20th at the Schenkel with a tournament total 2-over 218, alongside three nationally ranked competitors. The Lakeland, Fla. native leads Georgia Southern in stroke average (72.67) having played 21 rounds. Blondell captured his second individual title of the season at the Kaua'i Collegiate Cup in March, earning him Southern Conference men's golfer of the week honors.
Lethem paced the Eagles two weekends ago at the Schenkel, shooting a team-best even-par 216 for the tournament, placing him in a tie for 11th. The senior earned SoCon honors for his performance at the Schenkel where he earned his fifth top-20 finish of the season. The Eagle has a stroke average of 73, second best on the team.
The third Eagle on the team to earn SoCon honors this season is sophomore Monte who tied for 36th at the Schenkel with a 221 (+5). The Chantilly, Virginia native fired his lowest round on the final day, carding a 1-under par 71.
Senior Johnstun returns to the lineup after competing as an individual in the Schenkel where he placed 30th with a 4-over par 220. The Eagle is third on the team with a 73.60 stroke average.
Rounding out the lineup for Georgia Southern, LeFevre posted his highest finish of the season at the John Hayt Invitational in February. The senior carded a 229 on the championship style Sawgrass Country Club. Firing a low-round par 72 on the final day, LeFevre propelled himself to a 13th place finish leading Georgia Southern to a third place team finish.
As an individual, Fulford has a stroke average of 73.80 with two top-five finishes this season. The North Carolina native displayed his best performance at the Kaua'i Collegiate Cup in March. The Eagle fired a 3-under par 213, putting him in fourth place and leading the team to a first place tie.
Coming in to the final tournament of the regular season, Georgia Southern will strive for a top finish before the Southern Conference Tournament. “Obviously we want to keep playing good quality golf,” Mays said. “We want to keep playing our style of golf and keep playing solid golf. Our goal for our team is to play the best we can and see if we can't get four good scores each round.”
