SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced Wednesday morning that senior Drew Lethem has been named the SoCon men’s golfer of the week for all competition from March 18-24. Lethem is the third Eagle to receive the league’s weekly award in the first five weeks of the season.
“Drew has been a consistent player for us all year. I’m proud of the way he played in the Schenkel to come back well and play two solid rounds to finish tied for 11th. He’s been a big reason for our success this spring. With his help and all the other guys coming around, we should be in good shape for the rest of the season,” said head coach Larry Mays.
Lethem paced the Eagles in the 30th Annual Schenkel E-Z Go Invitational over the weekend, shooting a team best even-par 216. Lethem carded his lowest round on the final day with a 2-under par 70. The Eagle opened day three with two bogeys only to be erased with an eagle on hole 8 to put him even heading into the back nine where he launched back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14 to secure his 2-under par final round. The Camdenton, MO native finished the tournament in a tie for 11th place.
With Lethem’s help, the Eagles placed sixth in the 18-team event that featured all nationally ranked squads, including 13 in the top 50.
Georgia Southern jumped 10 spots on the Golfweek/Saragin Performance Index with this past weekend’s tournament. The Eagles now stand at No. 40 nationally.
The Eagles return to action with their final tournament of the season before the SoCon Championships. Georgia Southern will make the short trip to Augusta, Ga. for the Augusta State Invitational set for April 4-5.
