Lihue, Kaua’i, Hawai’i - The Georgia Southern men’s golf team wrapped up the Kaua’i Collegiate Cup in a two-way tie for top honors with a final three day team total 860. East Tennessee State was declared the champion by a tie-breaker procedure. Sophomore Logan Blondell earned individual champion honors holding on to a one stroke lead after two rounds to finish with a 208 three-round total.
“The team played very well the entire tournament and we can’t be happier with our result. Logan [Blondell] played three great rounds to earn his second individual win of the year,” said head coach Larry Mays. “It was a long way to come but coming home with a win will make the trip worth it.”
After two rounds played on Friday, Georgia Southern finished with a three-stroke advantage over ESTU. But ETSU battled back and tied for first on the final hole of the tournament. Both teams finished the tournament with a four-under-par 860, 15 strokes ahead of third place Wayland Baptist (879).
Blondell finished two rounds of play on the 6, 981-yard, par 72 Wailua Golf Course with a 139 two-round score to best a one shot advantage over Seamus Powers of ETSU. Both competitors shot identical 69s in the final round as Blondell held on to the lead and finished play with an 8-under-par 208 to earn his second individual win. Blondell finished four strokes in front of Michael Loppnow of Wayland Baptist in third place.
Competing on an individual basis, junior Spencer Fulford carded a three-under par 213, just five strokes behind top-finisher Blondell, placing him in sole possession of fourth place. Blondell and Fulford were named to the All-Tournament Team for finishing in the top-five.
Drew Lethem and Joe Monte both finished with a tournament total 220, placing them in a tie for 12th place. Lethem carded a 77 in the third round, while Monte trimmed off three strokes from his second round score to post a 73 in the final round to put both Eagles in 12th place.
Ryan LeFevre jumped eight spots on the leader board from round two to complete a tournament total 221 with a third round par-72. LeFevre’s 221 pushed him into a tie for 14th. Also jumping on the leader boards was Jordan Johnstun who finished two rounds with a total of 149, tying him in 22nd. But a one-over par 73 final round tally propelled him to a tie for 16th place with a 222.
Georgia Southern returns home this week as the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational is set for March 20-22 at the Forest Heights Country Club. The 18-team event will begin Friday morning.
