Golf Finishes Day One of Gator Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? Through the first two rounds of competition at the 2009 SunTrust Gator Invitational, the Georgia Southern men's golf team shot a 289-293 - - 582 Saturday (Feb. 14) and stands in 13th place. Senior Drew Lethem (Camdenton, MO) leads the Eagles individually after day one.
The Eagles rounded out day one two strokes behind Wake Forest (288 ? 292 - - 580) and leads UAB by six. Taking the top spot is host Florida with a 545, while Ole Miss trails in second by 10. Rounding out the top five are Duke (563), Coastal Carolina (565) and UCF (566).
“It's not the start we were looking for to start out our spring season, but the boys hung in there and fought well,” said head coach Larry Mays. “We ended up on the wrong side of the course today. Hopefully we can go out tomorrow, play well and move up a few spots.”
On the par 70 Mark Bostick Course, Lethem, one of two seniors in the lineup for Georgia Southern, fired a 1-over 71 in the first round and an even 1-over 71 in the second round for a total of 142. Lethem is tied for 24th.
Right behind Lethem are sophomores Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fl.) and Joe Monte (Chanilly, Va.), both with 146. Blondell carded even 3-over par 73s, while Monte opened with a 72 and posted a 74 in the second round. Blondell and Monte are both tied for 49th.
Jordan Johnstun (Evans, Ga.) and Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) finished out the day with a 150 and 154, respectively. Johnstun shot a 3-over 73 in the first and 7-over 77 in the second for a total 150, while Zabroske shot a 79-75 ? 154.
The third and final round of competition will be played on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. on holes 1 and 10.
