STATESBORO, GA – The Georgia Southern golf team signed three highly-touted high school seniors to National Letters of Intent as announced by the golf coaching staff Thursday (November 12). All three signees have been ranked in the 'Top 100' of the Golfweek/Sagarin recruiting class.
The signing class includes Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut), Will Evans (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing Christian Academy) and Drew Guffey (Bartow, Fla./Bartow).
“With this 2010 signing class, we focused on getting the best players who fit our program and where we are headed. On paper, this is one of the best recruiting classes in Georgia Southern Golf history,” said head Eagle golf coach Larry Mays. “First and foremost, all three players are great young men. Each of them excels both on the golf course and in the classroom.”
Anderson, who ranked as high as 32nd in the nation's 2010 recruiting class, helped lead the Farragut High School golf team to back-to-back state championships in 2008 and 2009, respectively, while finishing sixth and tying for sixth individually. The three-time All-State Team honoree earned individual district titles in 2007 and 2008, while posting six 'Top 3' post-season individual finishes. Anderson was named to the Knoxville News-Sentinel All-PrepExtra Team three times. In the final round of the 2009 PGA Junior Series event at Kearney Hill Golf Club Links, Anderson shot a 65 for a personal competitive low round. Anderson's three-round total 214 (77-72-65) placed him runner-up in the tournament.
“Hayden impressed us most of all with his overall athletic ability and competitiveness which has helped him develop into a fine junior golfer,” said Mays. “He comes from a tradition of winning at his high school and possesses a 'need to win' mentality. Hayden has proven himself on the junior circuit and is an explosive player.”
Ranked among the nation's top 100 for the 2010 recruiting class, Evans was named to the President's List at Eagles Landing Christian Academy where he sports a 4.0 GPA. A two-time All Region Team selection, Evans was the 2009 Henry County Male Athlete of the Year. Firing rounds of 71 and 69, respectively, Evans took the Belle Meade Junior title as part of the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour. He was one of only eight junior golfers within the state of Georgia to compete in the Georgia/South Carolina Junior Challenge Matches in 2009. Over the summer, Evans took fourth place at the Georgia Junior Championship and a share of 10th at the Southern Junior Championship. Entering his senior year of competition, Evans has been named MVP at Eagles Landing Christian Academy the previous three years.
“Will has a calmness about him that has allowed him to become a great competitor and throughout the recruiting process, everyone spoke highly of him as a person and a player,” stated Mays. “Will strives for success both in the classroom and on the golf course.”
Finalizing the signing class of 2010-2011, Guffey is a two-time Player of the Year on the Central Florida Junior Tour and was ranked as high a 41st in the nation's 2010 recruiting class rankings. He became the second youngest player in the history of the Polk County Amateur to win the event when he took the title in 2009 with a 7-under par 137 (70-67). Guffey owns the competitive course record at Juliette Falls Golf Club shooting a 67 in the final round of the Florida Junior Event, where he finished second. While playing in only nine out of 23 events, Guffey finished runner-up in the 2008-09 Florida Junior Player of the Year race. His run was highlighted by a win at the Sara Bay Country Club and four 'Top 5' finishes. A four-year letterwinner at Bartow High School, Guffey has earned four All-County Team honors.
“Drew has a laid back demeanor that helps him stay focused in everything he does. He brings a level of expectation onto the course each time he competes and looks forward to the challenges his opponents bring him,” Mays said. “Drew will bring his great determination with him to Statesboro next year and immediately challenge his teammates to maintain the same level of competitiveness.
“We feel that we have signed a great class that will help continue the success of our program,” stated Mays. “With this incoming class, we have signed a solid future and we look forward to getting Drew, Hayden and Will on campus next fall.”
