Eagle Volleyball Returns Home to Begin Four-Match Homestand

STATESBORO, GA – After a two-match road swing, the Georgia Southern volleyball team returns to Hanner Fieldhouse for a four-match homestand beginning Saturday, October 24 with Appalachian State. Following the volleyball action against Appalachian State, the team will host a carnival for all children in attendance to the match who purchased a ticket. The Eagles will then play host to Western Carolina on Sunday, October 25. Both matches are slated for 2 p.m. starts.
In addition to the season-long volleyball promotions that take place during the matches, Southern Explosion will perform at halftime of Saturday's match and following the conclusion of the match, the volleyball team will host a carnival free to all children who hold a ticket to the contest. The carnival, which features games and a bounce house courtesy of Party Harbor, will take place from 4:00-6:00 p.m. inside Hanner Fieldhouse.
Georgia Southern, sporting a 9-1 record playing in Hanner Fieldhouse this season, will look to snap a two-match skid from weekend competition when it plays host to Appalachian State. The Eagles (15-8, 5-3) are coming off a 3-1 loss at UNC Greensboro. Two Eagles posted double-figure kill performances in the match as sophomore Lauren Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.) set a season-best 16 kills. Claybaugh picked up her third double-double of the season with 10 digs. Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) recorded 10 kills and 13 digs to record her 13th double-double of the season and 29th in her career.
Sanford leads the Eagles on the season with 291 kills for a .239 attack percentage. The sophomore Eagle ranks second in the Southern Conference with a 3.51 kills per set average. Freshman setter Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) owns a team-best 917 assists, placing her second in the conference with a 10.66 assists per set average.
“It's good to return home after a tough weekend on the road,” said head coach Chad Callihan. “We hope to capitalize on our home court advantage and get back to playing more consistently. It will be a challenging weekend of competition as I expect both teams to give us a good run.”
Appalachian State enters weekend competition at 9-13 overall and 5-3 in SoCon action. The Mountaineers capped off their four-match homestand with a 3-1 victory over Wofford (October 17). After falling behind, 1-0, ASU collected the next three sets to record the conference victory. Caroline Sedon posted a season-high 13 kills in the winning effort as Kelsey Kuehner added 13.
For the year, ASU is led by Maja Jechorek with 223 kills. Sedon owns a team-best 99 blocks on the season, ranking second in the SoCon averaging 1.22 per set. Sporting a 4.32 digs per set average, Cassie Engelgau ranks second in the conference, and leads the Mountaineers with 328 digs.
Looking to rebound from a 3-2 loss to Wofford, Western Carolina brings a 3-19, 0-8 record into Sunday's contest. The Catamounts took the second and fourth sets to force a final fifth set against the Terriers. Despite holding an early advantage, Wofford grabbed the final set, 15-12, taking the win.
The Catamounts are led by Amanda Kerr who owns 155 kills on the year and Katie Hennessey who boasts 555 assists in 22 matches. Picking up 271 digs, Liz Rondone leads the WCU defense. The Catamounts will travel to Davidson before facing the Eagles on Sunday.
