Eagles Fall at UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Two Eagles posted double-figure kill performances Sunday afternoon (October 18), but the Georgia Southern volleyball team could not carry the momentum over from a third set win as the Eagles fell, 3-1, to UNC Greensboro in Fleming Gymnasium. With the Southern Conference loss, the Eagles fell to 15-8 overall, 5-3 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Spartans extended their win streak to seven matches, improving to 13-9, 6-2.
Sophomore Lauren Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.) set a season-best 16 kills, earning her 3rd double-double of the season with 10 digs. Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) picked up her 29th career double-double, 13th of the season, with 10 kills and 13 digs. Freshman setter Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) posted 39 assists and 15 digs, while senior Cristin Haines (Palos Heights, Ill.) tied a match-best 18 digs to lead the Eagles defensively.
Lead by one double-figure kill performance, the Spartans' Caley Redden posted 16 kills and 12 digs. Ari Lysacek posted a match-best 40 assists, while Catherine Hanners tied Haines with 18 digs. Kayleigh Knerr added 17 digs to the winning Spartan effort.
In an opening stanza that witnessed 14 ties and seven lead changes, Georgia Southern held the advantage until the Spartans tied the set at 7-all. A back-and-forth affair ensued until UNCG tied the set at 19-all off a Georgia Southern error. The Spartans took the next two points for a 21-19 advantage, forcing an Eagle timeout. UNCG closed out the opening set with a 4-2 run, 25-21.
UNCG wasted no time jumping out to an early lead in the second set, holding an eight-point lead at 13-5. Two attack errors and a Kirby Monson (Houston, Tex.) kill put the score at 13-8 as the Spartans took a timeout. Following the timeout, UNCG pulled away and led by as many as nine points twice, before closing out the second stanza, 25-20.
Trailing 3-0 to begin the third set, the Eagles put together seven unanswered points to tie the match at 3-all and take the lead to 7-3. A Claybaugh kill gave Georgia Southern a 16-10 advantage, as the Eagles extended their lead to seven points at 19-12 with a Monson kill. Georgia Southern picked up the next five points compliments of three Spartan errors, a Claybaugh kill and service ace from Haines. The Eagles rounded out the third set win, 25-14, off an attack error by Redden.

Sanford knocked off the first match point, but the Spartans were able to secure the match, 25-23, with a Redden kill.
Georgia Southern returns home to begin a four-match homestand on Saturday, October 24. The Eagles play host to Appalachian State at 2 p.m.
