Furman Edges Women's Soccer with Unconventional Goals

STATESBORO, Ga. - Furman (10-4-0, 4-3-0) used two unconventional goals to edge the Georgia Southern women's soccer team (0-14-0, 0-7-0) 2-0 Friday. The Eagles out-shot the Paladins 11-6 and held Furman to one shot in the second half.
Margaret Antonik scored the first goal off a penalty kick in the 35th minute after she was fouled on a breakaway. Antonik launched the shot into the upper left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
Furman's second goal came on an own goal in the 37th minute. The Eagles got crossed up when passing the ball back to the goalkeeper, and the ball went in the right side of the net for an own goal.
Jenny Anderson (Birmingham, Ala.) led the attack with two shots on goal as the Eagles tied their season high of 11 shots. GS also recorded 11 shots against the The Citadel (Oct 8).
The match opened with the Eagles on the attack. Two quick shots forced a save by Jessica Smith. Anderson took a nice shot off a breakaway from the right side of the box, forcing a chest-high save by Smith.
Furman worked the ball into the Eagles' half and received a corner kick in the 5th minute, but Ashley Sepaniak (Cumming, Ga.) and Georgia Southern's defense stepped up and cleared the ball.
The Paladins received another corner kick in the 10th minute and took their first shot off the kick. Claire Hodge used a header off the cross to put a shot on target, forcing Lauren Santos (Berwyn, Ill.) to make the save.
The Eagles controlled the ball and earned a corner kick in the 19th minute. Jennifer Godfrey (Melbourne, Fla.) launched a high shot off the kick from Danae Kaimuloa (Escondido, Calif.).
GS rebounded from the two goals and played a strong second half, holding Furman to one shot. The Eagles opened the second half with two shots. Anderson recorded her second shot on goal in the 45th minute, forcing a save by Smith.
The Eagles had a nice chance in the 62nd minute with a beautiful cross that led to a well-placed header by Chelsea Kephart (Cumming, Ga.). Smith came up with a save to deny the goal.
Candace Marshall (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Holly Dyer (Auburn, Ga.) both had shots blocked by the Furman defense in the second half.
GS earned a late free kick after a Paladin foul. Michelle Carlson (Melbourne, Fla.) took the kick and placed it into the box, but Furman cleared the ball, earning their fourth SoCon win.
The Eagles return to action Sunday for their final home game against Wofford at 1 p.m. Women's Soccer will celebrate their four seniors with Senior Day before the match with the Terriers.
