Eagles Travel for Pair of Conference Matches

STATESBORO, GA – The Georgia Southern volleyball team will hit the road for two Southern Conference match-ups this weekend. Elon and UNC Greensboro will play host to the Eagles on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both matches are slated for 2 p.m. starts.
Coming off a 3-0 sweep over the Davidson Wildcats, Georgia Southern brings a 15-6 overall record and 5-1 league mark into weekend action, standing in second place of the SoCon South Division. Hitting .313 in the sweep of Davidson Tuesday night (October 13), Georgia Southern stands second in the SoCon in hitting percentage for the season at .240. Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) picked up her 11th double-double of the season and 27th career double-double leading the team with 12 kills and 10 digs in the winning effort.
The Eagles, who are riding a five-match win streak, lead the conference in kills per set average at 13.37 led by sophomore outside hitter Sanford with 267 on the season. Sanford is second in the SoCon with a 3.56 kills per set average.
Freshman Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) leads the league in assists per set with a 10.76 average, as she holds 839 assists on the year. As a team, Georgia Southern ranks second in the conference in assists per set average of 12.32. Senior libero Cristin Haines (Palos Heights, Ill.) owns a team-best 298 digs.
Elon sports a 15-4 overall record and a 3-3 conference ledger, while owning a 6-1 home record in Alumni Gym. The Phoenix are coming off a 3-0 loss at Furman. Sarah Schermerhorn and Traci Stewart led the team posting seven kills each.
Stewart leads the team in kills with 181 for a 2.59 kills per set average. Emily Regan leads the team in assists with 515, while Ali Deatsch paces the defense with 276 kills. As a team, Elon holds its opponents to the lowest hitting percentage in the SoCon with a .138 attack percentage average.
Georgia Southern leads the all-time series advantage between the conference foes, 6-1, as the teams will meet for the eighth time in program history Saturday. The Eagles avenged a 2007 loss to Elon with a swept last season in Hanner Fieldhouse.
UNC Greensboro hosts Davidson Saturday before welcoming the Eagles to Fleming Gymnasium Sunday at 2 p.m. UNCG, also on a five-match win streak, boasts an 11-9 overall mark and 4-2 SoCon record. Freshman Olivia Humphries paced the Spartans to a 3-0 win over Wofford last Sunday recording 11 kills. Ari Lysacek notched her 10th double-double of the season with 30 assists and 12 digs, while Catherine Hanners led with a match-high 23 digs.
The Spartans are led this season by a group of upperclassmen as Emily Lindborg leads UNCG with 2.56 kills per set and 53 blocks. Lysacek owns 750 assists for nearly 10 assists per set on average, ranking her third in the conference. Catherine Hanners leads the defense with 295 digs, followed closely by Kayleigh Knerr with 276.
The conference foes will meet for the 24th time in history on Sunday. The Spartans lead the all-time series by one match, 12-11. UNCG picked up both matches against Georgia Southern in 2008 as the Eagles will look to avenge a season-ending Southern Conference Tournament loss to the Spartans.
