Women's Soccer Returns Home for Two SoCon Matches

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern women's soccer (0-13-0, 0-6-0) returns home for the final time this season and will face Furman (9-4-0, 3-3-0) and Wofford (3-10-1, 2-3-1) in SoCon action this weekend. The Eagles will celebrate senior day Sunday when they face the Terriers at 1 p.m.
GS enters this weekend after being bested in a pair of one-goal decisions last week. The Citadel paid a visit to Statesboro last Thursday and narrowly escaped with a 2-1 win. The Eagles played a strong second half, holding the Bulldogs to three shots. Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) scored her first goal of the season, cutting the lead to one goal. Oland leads the Eagles' offense with 14 shots and one goal scored.
Sunday saw GS hit the road for the short trip to Charleston to face the SoCon leader College of Charleston. The Cougars recorded a first half goal, but that was all they could muster against the Eagles' defense. Michelle Carlson (Melbourne, Fla.) attempted to record the game-tying goal, but Katie Tate came up with the save.
The Eagles are led on defense by seniors Carlson and goalkeeper Lauren Santos (Berwyn, Ill.). Santos is the SoCon's active career leader in saves (321).
The Furman Paladins enter Friday's 4 p.m. match after going 1-1 last week. They dropped a nail-biter to Samford 2-1 in overtime and earned their third conference win over Chattanooga Thursday.
The Paladins' offense ranks third in the SoCon in shots and fourth in goals. Martha Hall leads the attack with 40 shots and is tied for first in the SoCon with 9 nine goals. They also sport the active SoCon career leader in assists, Sara El-Shami, who has recorded 24 assists in her four years at Furman. The senior from Roswell, Ga. has tallied four assists this season.
The Wofford Terriers come to Eagle Field for Senior Day Sunday. The 1 p.m. match will be the first of two Sunday. The men's soccer team will face the College of Charleston at 4 p.m. in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Terriers went 2-0-1 in their last three matches and battled to a 0-0 tie Sunday against Samford.
Wofford is led on offense by Nikki Siebert. Siebert has recorded four goals on nine shots this season. Sydney Reed leads the team in shots with 20. The Terriers' defense is led by Erika Christensen, who has recorded 43 saves and sports a 1.65 goals against average.
