Van Dyke Honored as SoCon Volleyball Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Averaging 12.36 assists per set in three matches, freshman setter Kate Van Dyke has been honored as the Southern Conference Vollyball Player of the Week for all competition October 5-11, as announced by the league office Monday.
“It's great to see Kate honored this week for her effort. She has been a great addition to our program and works extremely hard week in and week out to become acclimated to our program,” said head coach Chad Callihan. “We're extremely proud of her and couldn't be happier for her to receive this honor.”
In the three matches last week, the freshman Eagle from Shawnee, Kansas, paced Georgia Southern to three victories, including two over conference foes. Van Dyke posted a career-high in kills and assists in the Eagles' win over College of Charleston on Saturday, posting eight kills and 63 assists. She averaged 12.6 assists per set and hit .538 with eight kills and one error. The Eagle posted a double-double with 63 assists and 14 digs, falling just shy of a triple-double with eight kills. With one block assist and two service aces in the match, Van Dyke helped lead Georgia Southern to its first victory over the Cougars since 2004.
Van Dyke averaged 13.0 assists per set with a match-high 39 assists in the sweeping of The Citadel Friday night. She also recorded a match-high two block assists and the lone block solo from an Eagle in the winning effort. In the Eagles' first sweep of the week, Van Dyke recorded 34 assists over North Florida with an average of 11.3. Along with six digs, she posted a .429 attack percentage with three kills.
Recording 136 assists, averaging 12.36 on the week, Van Dyke leads the team on the season in assists with 803 and averages 10.71 per set. She ranks third on the team in digs with 171 and has tallied 64 kills. Her 19 service aces rank second.
Georgia Southern concludes its four-match homestand on Tuesday, October 13, hosting Davidson. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse as the Eagles participate in the Dig Pink Campaign.
Also nominated this week were Appalachian State's Maggie Seeds, College of Charleston's Cole Dawley, The Citadel's Tatum Jestila, Davidson's Sarabeth Peele, Furman's Kelly Kirby, UNC Greensboro's Emily Lindborg, Samford's Sheriden Stangohr, Chattanooga's Cassie Conner and Wofford's Joanna Suddath.
