Eagle Volleyball Concludes Homestand with Davidson Tuesday

STATESBORO, GA – Closing out a four-match home stretch, the Georgia Southern volleyball team will host Southern Conference foe Davidson on Tuesday, October 13, in Hanner Fieldhouse. On Dig Pink night, first serve is slated for 6 p.m.
Georgia Southern (14-6, 4-1) will look to improve on a dominating 8-1 home record entering the match coming off a weekend of SoCon victories. The Eagles took a sweep over The Citadel (October 9) and a five-set win over College of Charleston (October 10). For her performance this past week, freshman setter Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) was honored as the Southern Conference Volleyball Player of the Week after leading the Eagles to three victories.
Against College of Charleston, the Eagles and Cougars tossed sets back-and-forth forcing a final fifth set in which CofC held the advantage and two match points. Georgia Southern fought off both match points, tying the match at 14-all, and sealed the win with consecutive points. Under second year head coach Chad Callihan, the win marked the first victory for Georgia Southern over College of Charleston since 2004.
Owning 255 kills, sophomore Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) ranks first on the team in kills, while senior libero Cristin Haines (Palos Heights, Ill.) leads with 275 digs. Freshman Van Dyke paces the team with 802 sets.
Davidson has gotten off to a rough start to the 2009 campaign and enters the Tuesday match-up boasting a 4-17 overall record and 1-4 conference mark. The Wildcats are coming off a 3-0 loss to College of Charleston Sunday afternoon. Junior Sarabeth Peele paced the Wildcats with 14 kills and setter Anna Bradbury distributed 32 assists.
For the year, Peele leads the offense with 315 kills, while Molly Crenshaw paces the defense with 254 digs. Hayley Lawson leads the team with 495 assists, averaging 7.62 per set.
Tuesday is also Dig Pink Night and all fans in attendance to the match are asked to sport pink in the stands in support of breast cancer. The Dig Pink Campaign, in which over 550 colleges and universities are set to participate in, is a movement to raise awareness and money for the prevention of breast cancer.
Single-game tickets are priced at $5 for an adult and $1 for youth (ages 3-12). Season tickets for the 2009 Georgia Southern volleyball season are $15 for a general admission pass. A family plan, which includes two adult passes and two children passes, can be purchased for only $35.
