STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern women's soccer team (0-9, 0-2) opens the home portion of their conference schedule with two matches this weekend. The Eagles will face Elon (6-2-1, 2-0) Friday at 4 p.m. and UNC Greensboro (6-4, 2-0) Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Eagles opened conference play last weekend and were edged by Appalachian State and Western Carolina. Georgia Southern held the Catamounts to only a late second-half goal but was unable to tie the match. The match was the fourth decided by a goal this season.
Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) continues to lead the Eagles in shots. Oland has taken nine shots on the season with three coming on goal. Kyrstin Smith (Acworth, Ga.) paces GS in shots on goal with four and has found the back of the net in her first season with the Eagles.
The Phoenix enter the match with a four-game win streak, including a pair of overtime wins over Jacksonville State and Furman. All four matches have been decided by the same score 2-1. Elon's defense has held its opponents to one goal or less in all but one match this season.
Molly Calpin leads the Phoenix's attack with three goals and 21 shots. Calpin has scored three game-winning goals and put 10 shots on target.
The Spartans opened conference play with a pair of home shutout wins over Furman and Wofford last weekend. UNC Greensboro defeated #11 Duke 1-0 earlier in the season and lost a pair of 1-0 matches to #1 North Carolina and #4 Stanford.
Kristin Player leads the Spartans' offense with four goals scored and six assists. UNCG has outscored their opponents 16-9 but trail in shots on goal 52-43.
The women's soccer team will also help host the Third Annual Little Eagles Soccer Clinic following the conclusion of Saturday's men's soccer match against Davidson.
