STATESBORO, GA – Georgia Southern will be one of 15 collegiate golf programs to make their way to Tampa, Fla., this weekend for the Gary Koch Intercollegiate, October 3-4. The two-day tournament will play 36 holes on Saturday with the final round beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday on the par-72, 7,389 yard Old Memorial Golf Club.
Auburn and Kentucky will co-host the tournament that features Augusta State, East Tennessee State, Florida State, Georgia Southern, UAB, Florida, North Carolina, North Florida, Louisiana State, Mississippi, South Florida, Texas Tech and Virginia. Leading the teams are Florida State and Florida, who are ranked seventh and eighth, respectively, in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
“This week we will see our toughest competition of the fall and we know we have to step up our game a little if we want to bring home some hardware,” said head coach Larry Mays. “We are riding two good performances coming in to this tournament, so that gives us a little momentum. But we need stronger third and fourth scores each round to compete against the best teams in the country.”
Georgia Southern is coming off a second-place finish at the Adams Cup of Newport Collegiate where senior Ryan Zabroske took second in the individual standings. Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) fired a career-low 7-under 209 tournament total pacing the Eagles to an aggregated 882, six strokes out of first place.
“We have gotten good play out of a number of different players during this fall, helping build the dynamics of the team,” stated Mays. “We also have strong team chemistry, which always enhances our level of play.”
Forming the travel squad for the Eagles will be Logan Blondell, Spence Fulford, Joe Monte, Florian Sander and Zabroske. Senior Matt Deal will also make the trip competing as an individual.
The Eagles are paired with UAB and South Florida for the first and second rounds. The trio will tee off hole one at 7:40 a.m.
