Carlson, Finneren Earn NSCAA Regional Academic Awards

STATESBORO, Ga. -- Juniors Michelle Carlson and Holli Finneren of the Georgia Southern women's soccer team were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for their hard work both on the field and inside the classroom during the 2007 season.
Announced at the NSCAA All-America luncheon in Baltimore, Md., both Eagles earned 2007 NSCAA/adidas Scholar Honorable Mention recognition for the South region.
“Michelle and Holli are very deserving of this honor,” said head coach Ashley Hart. “It is great to see them get the recognition for their hard work both on and off the field. I am very proud of both of them because to receive this award you not only have to be a great soccer player but you have to be a great student as well.”
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average throughout his or her career, start more than 50 percent of all games, be a significant contributor to the team and be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution.
Carlson, a defender from Melbourne, Fla., and Finneren, a midfielder from Lake Orion, Mich. both played key roles on the soccer field and excelled in the classroom during the 2007 season.
Carlson started in all 17 games in the back, leading the team with most minutes played (1,477). She has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.68 up to the end of the soccer season and is majoring in Biology.
Finneren started in 15 of each of her 17 appearances, finishing fourth on the team in points (5) after tallying two goals and one assist. An Exercise Science major, Finneren has kept a 3.84 GPA up to the end of the season.
“Both Holli and Michelle have been able to balance their time and excel in both of these areas,” added Hart. “It is great for them to bring this regional recognition to our program. This is a great honor for our team and a great standard to set for the future.”
The awards are a recent addition to the continued academic success, a reputation that the Georgia Southern women's soccer program has gained since its inception in 1993. Overall, 10 Eagles have earned a total of 14 NSCAA Academic awards, including two Academic All-America honors.
