Lady Eagles to Battle Elon at Hanner, Monday

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern women's basketball team concludes its two-game homestand, Monday (Feb. 4), as it plays host to Elon at Hanner Fieldhouse. The Southern Conference battle is slated for 5:15 p.m. as part of a basketball doubleheader with the men's team.
The Lady Eagles (12-9, 8-2 SoCon) are looking to add another win to its flawless home record (9-0) after recently defeating UNC Greensboro (Feb. 2) by a 68-57 decision. Having already concluded the first half of the conference slate, the win completed the season sweep of the Spartans in the latter half of the conference schedule.
Elon (7-15, 2-8 SoCon) used a 34-point second half to rally from a 12-point halftime deficit, but the College of Charleston held on for a three-point victory, 56-53, Saturday (Feb. 2) at Charleston, S.C. The Phoenix comes to Statesboro hoping to avoid a season sweep, having lost earlier to GSU (Jan. 7) at Elon by a 64-46 margin.
The two schools have met on only nine occasions, with the Lady Eagles claiming a 5-4 all-time series edge. Georgia Southern has won the last two games versus the Phoenix. The last time Elon claimed victory over the Lady Eagles occurred last season at Elon in a 55-50 defeat (Jan. 6). Georgia Southern holds a 3-1 record over Elon in games played in Statesboro.
Pacing the Lady Eagles in scoring is senior guard Tiffany Brown (Waxhaw, N.C.) with 12.6 points per game. She is followed by classmate guard Shawnda Atwood (Pensacola, Fla.) with 10.3 points per contest, while leading the team with 5.4 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) dished out a team-high 3.2 assists per game and consistently ranks among the nation's leaders in assist to turnover ratio (1.90).
Elon's Tierra Bumbrey and Kitara McMoore pace the team with 12.3 and 10.3 points per game, respectively. McMoore also pulls down a team-best 7.3 rebounds per contest, while Bumbrey leads the team in assists (3.3) and steals (3.1).
A 1985 graduate of Louisiana Tech, head coach Rusty Cram is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Eagles and carries a 179-160 career and school record.
Elon head coach Brenda Paul, a 1977 graduate of North Georgia, comes to Statesboro with a 167-220 school record in her 14th year at the helm of the Phoenix. She holds a 436-423 career record in her 30th year overall.
