SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The 2008 Southern Conference Volleyball Championship field has been set after the 18-match regular-season ended today. The tournament is being hosted by UNC Greensboro and will be held in the Spartans' home gym, Fleming Gymnasium.
Georgia Southern (16-17 overall, 9-9 SoCon) enters the tournament as the South Division's number three seed. The Eagles will play the final first round match on Friday (Nov. 21) at 7 p.m. against the host Spartans. Georgia Southern is looking to avenge a 3-0 loss to UNCG at home last month.
Georgia Southern is aiming for its third SoCon Volleyball Tournament Championship in program history and first title since the 2003 season.
The tournament will have four matches on tap for Friday. The first match will begin at 10 a.m. with the South Division's No. 2 seed, Furman, facing off against the North Division's No. 3 seed, Chattanooga. The second match features SoCon newcomer and North Division No.1 seed, Samford, meeting the No. 4 team from the South Division, Elon. The third match has the South Division No. 1 seed and defending SoCon Tournament Champion, College of Charleston, meeting North Division No. 4 seed, Elon. The final match of day one features the host Spartans against the Eagles.
Two semifinal matches will take place on Saturday, with the final scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Last season the College of Charleston Cougars defeated UNC Greensboro, 3-1, to take the 2007 tournament title.
