Statesboro, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer Team lost a tough close match to Samford 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The Lady Eagles fall to 4-5-2 (2-2-0) on the season while the Bulldogs advance to 3-8-1 (2-1-1).
Samford scored an early goal in just the 7th minute of the match. Mary Shelton Bryant scored her second goal of the season off of a corner kick by Caroline Baxter.
“When you play a good team you cannot give them any opportunities, and they finished a good opportunity on their corner,” said Head Coach Ashley Hart.
Georgia Southern held Samford scoreless for the remainder of the match but was unable to score a goal and lost the match 1-0.
“Samford is a very good team, and we came out flat in the first half,” said Coach Hart.
The Lady Eagles came out in the second half and created some opportunities to score but were unable to do so.
Senior Ashley Toussaint (Warner Robbins, Ga.) took four shots on the day two of which were on goal.
Jenny Anderson (Birmingham, Ala.) had a good opportunity to score off of a pass from Toussaint but ended up sailing the ball high and over the net.
The Lady Eagles' final opportunity to score came in the last minute of play when Danae Kaimuloa (Escondido, Calif.) took a corner kick, but Samford successfully cleared the ball out of the box.
“We really stepped up our play in the second half, but when you’re playing in a conference game you need to play a full 90 minutes,” said Coach Hart.
Lauren Santos (Berwyn, Ill.) and the Georgia Southern defense shutdown Samford after the Bulldogs scored a goal early in the first half. Santos made three saves on the day.
The Lady Eagles continue conference play in Charleston, S.C. against The Citadel on October the 10th at 4 pm.
