Volleyball's Win Streak Ends at the Hands of UNC Greensboro

STATESBORO, Ga. --- The UNC Greensboro volleyball team never trailed in taking a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-22) victory over Georgia Southern Monday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.
The loss ends the Eagles' five match-winning streak and drops them to 12-12 overall and 6-4 in the Southern Conference. The Spartans move to 15-7 and 7-2.
“We played a really good team tonight,” said GSU head coach Chad Callihan. “In doing so, we're trying to learn how we have to compete every point, do the little things, limit our errors and take advantage of opportunities. That's the difference when you're playing some of the top teams in the league. The combination of our mistakes along with playing a quality team made it tough to get ahead.”
UNCG jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the match thanks in part to three GSU errors. The Spartans doubled up the Eagles at the 14-7 mark and closed out the set with six straight points that included four attack errors and an ace.
“Their players are probably a little further along in understanding how to compete night in and night out,” said Callihan. “We felt like we were flat when we came out for our warmup at five o'clock and I think that carried over to the match. Not to take anything away from Greensboro but when you have that and compound it on top of playing a really good team, you're going to struggle.”
Georgia Southern hit -.024 in the opening frame and .071 for the match while committing 24 errors.
“If we could have minimized our mistakes then we would have allowed ourselves an opportunity to compete a little bit more,” said Callihan. “They outscored us by 11 points which if you break that down over three games is about a three-point difference, but if you look at the scores, they beat us by 13, 14 points in one set. Our errors certainly hurt us tonight, but we'll learn from it and hopefully the next time we get out on the court and we have somebody apply pressure we'll be able to handle it a little bit better because that was really the difference tonight.”
UNCG's Kayren Finney led all players with 12 kills on 19 swings for a .632 hitting percentage, and added five block assists.
GSU senior Christy Dowd (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded a team-best nine kills in just two sets.
The Eagles go back out on the road next weekend for matches at Wofford on Saturday and Furman on Sunday.
