Volleyball Travels to Charleston for a Pair of Matches

STATESBORO, Ga. --- The Georgia Southern volleyball team heads north to take on the College of Charleston and The Citadel this weekend.
The Eagles face CofC Friday night at 7 p.m. and The Citadel Saturday at 2 p.m. Both matches will be shown live on www.GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com.
“I know it's going to be a tough weekend,” said head coach Chad Callihan. “We're going to have to be focused and really ready to play. Both teams are playing with a lot of energy and really getting after it on the floor. I think the good thing with us is we played well in our last road match and hopefully we can carry that over to this weekend.”
After winning their Southern Conference opener on the road at Davidson, GSU lost twice at home last weekend, 3-1 to Chattanooga and 3-0 to Samford.
“For us it's really just playing with a better focus and having a better mindset when we step on to the floor,” said Callihan. “We had that when we went to Davidson last week. I don't know if there are more distractions when we're at home or it's easier to get sidetracked, but there was a big difference when we played last Wednesday and when we followed that up with our Saturday-Sunday matches. Right now we're talking about more between-the-ears stuff than physical.”
Charleston (9-5, 2-0) has won four straight matches, including their first two against league competition, defeating Wofford and Furman 3-1.
“They've proven that they're the team to beat the last few years,” said Callihan. “But we're really concentrating on getting better. I think if we play well we can compete with anybody in this conference. The problem for us is that we've been so up-and-down, it's always a question of which team we're going to get. I just want to see us level out and play a consistent game with energy and focus. When we do that, we have some success. I guess we haven't gotten too caught up in who the opponent is right now. Obviously Charleston deserves a lot of credit for what they've done the past few years but we're a little more concerned at this point where we're at as far as what we're doing on our side as opposed to who we're going against right now.”
The Citadel (6-8, 0-2) has already matched last season's win total and while the Bulldogs have lost both SoCon matches thus far, they took Furman to four sets and Wofford to five. Earlier in the year The Citadel defeated Wofford 3-0 in a non-conference tilt.
“They're playing very well, really getting after it defensively,” said Callihan. “Probably the difference this year from where they've been the last couple years is that they have a few more offensive options to complement that defense. They pose as big a threat as anybody. If you go into any match in this league and you're not ready to play then you're going to come out on the wrong end and we've already experienced that this season.”
