College of Charleston Dispatches Volleyball in Three

STATESBORO, Ga. --- The College of Charleston hit .354 as a team en route to a 3-0 (30-19, 30-13, 30-24) volleyball win over host Georgia Southern Friday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.
The Cougars, 20-7 overall and 14-2 in the Southern Conference, have won 16 of their last 18 matches. The Eagles drop to 9-18 and 6-9.
“Everybody knows College of Charleston is one of the best teams in our league,” said GSU head coach Nicole McCray. “They came in here and put together a very solid match. But when you play against a team like that, you've got to limit your unforced errors, and we did not do that tonight.”
The Cougars hit no lower than .333 in any game while holding the Eagles to a .085 hitting percentage overall and -.108 in the second game alone.
“They're very hard to defend and when they pass as well as they did, it makes it even harder because they have hitters that can kill the ball from all positions,” said McCray. “[But] if we serve aggressively, it may be a different match.”
CofC earned a 6-0 run early in game one to take control, thanks to five GSU errors, and finished it off with another 6-0 run on four more errors.
The run of miscues continued in game two as Georgia Southern committed 10 with only six kills. Emily Sawin served up a 9-0 rally to eventually lead 27-12.
Game three was more tightly contested but the Cougars never trailed again after taking a 3-2 lead.
“They won the serving-and-passing battle. When you serve and pass as well as they did, it's very hard to defend their hitters. We knew that the key coming in was going to be serving and passing, and they did that better than we did.”
Senior Gorana Bacic (Richmond, Va.) led all players with 15 kills on a .323 attack percentage. Senior Bailey Coleman (Awendaw, S.C.) also recorded a match-high 20 digs.
“We played hard and Gorana Bacic, with this being her last weekend at home, she left it all out on the court. This was a huge match for her and we've got to get everybody playing as hard as she is.”
For Charleston, Tiffany Blum tallied 13 kills, a .478 hitting percentage and seven block assists. Lindsey Kane had 46 assists and Megan Parkerson posted 18 digs.
The Eagles return to the floor Sunday with a match against The Citadel beginning at 2 p.m. The team will honor its three seniors, Bacic, Coleman and Flavia Pereira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), before the match.
