Volleyball Falls to SoCon Co-Leader Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The Georgia Southern volleyball team lost to a streaking College of Charleston team Friday, losing 3-1 (30-22, 30-14, 27-30, 30-25) at Kresse Arena.
The Cougars remain unbeaten in Southern Conference play at 6-0 and 11-5 overall while winning their sixth straight match. The Eagles drop to 5-14 on the season and 2-5 in the league.
“Even though we lost, we played a great match,” said GSU head coach Nicole McCray. “The College of Charleston is a great team and they served well which I think was the difference in the match.”
Charleston posted 14 team blocks and served up 10 aces. They held Georgia Southern to a .135 hitting percentage and put up a .231 percentage on offense.
CofC took game one 30-22 and rolled in game two 30-14. After the extended intermission, GSU rebounded and scored the final four points of the third frame to win 30-27 to cut the deficit to 2-1.
An early 3-0 Georgia Southern lead in game four quickly evaporated thanks to four straight errors. The Cougars never trailed again and ended the match on a 7-3 run after GSU closed to 24-23.
“We made a couple of changes in the lineup and just came out hungry and although we lost, we came out fighting,” added McCray. “Our girls played hard.”
Senior Gorana Bacic (Richmond, Va.) led the Eagles with 13 kills and added three blocks. Freshman Michelle Uzoh (San Antonio, Texas) totaled eight kills and a .316 hitting percentage with five blocks. Junior Mae Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) had 49 assists and senior Bailey Coleman (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) tallied a team-high 17 digs.
For Charleston, Annie Uthe recorded a match-high 16 kills on just two errors for a .438 attack percentage. Deanna Patrick (15) and Whitney Russell (13) also recorded double-figure kills. Lindsey Kane had 51 assists and Cole Dawley accumulated 20 digs.
Georgia Southern returns to action Sunday when they play at The Citadel. Start time is set for 2 p.m.
