Eagle Golf Finishes Fifth at Landfall Tradition

WILMINGTON, N.C. ? The Georgia Southern golf team finished in fifth place at the Landfall Tradition's par-72, 7,130-yard Country Club of Landfall, Sunday (Oct. 28), claiming its second top-five finish and third top-ten finish of the fall season.

The Eagles finished up 54 holes shooting an 18-over 306 on the day, and finishing the three-day tournament with a 25-over 889 tally. No. 25 Virginia Tech claimed the tournament title after moving up from day one's sixth-place finish. Virginia Tech and Tulsa finished with an 8-over 872, but the Hokies were declared the winner based on the 5th player score for the last round.

“We hung in real well in the first day,” said head coach Larry Mays. “Overall we got a top-five finish and the group played well. We felt like we could have played better, but it gives us something to build on.”

Junior Drew Lethem (Camdenton, Mo.) was the Eagles' top finisher of the tournament, ending the day with a 5-over 77 and finishing up with an even-par 216. Claiming the individual medal was Tulsa's Nicolas Geyger who finished at 9-under 207.

Junior Ryan LeFevre (Boca Raton, Fla.) shot a 4-over on the day and finished tied for 14th place with a 5-over 221.

Tying for 24th place was freshman Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) shooting a 6-over 78 on the day and finishing at 9-over 225.

Sophomore Spencer Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) and junior teammate Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) both finished tied for 38th place after carding a 15-over 231. Zabroske's 3-over 75 in the final round was the team's low 18 on the day.

With two top-five finished in two weeks, including a tournament title, Mays is optimistic about the remainder of the season.

“We showed some signs of life in these last couple tournaments,” said Mays. “We can take those results and run with them. We know what we need to work on.”

The Eagles will take a break from competition until next year when they play at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz. Hosted by the University of Arizona, the tournament is slated for Jan. 28-29, 2008.
