STATESBORO – Georgia Southern Athletics, along with Georgia Southern Sports Properties, announced Wednesday that longtime Voice of the Eagles Danny Reed will be departing the department at the end of July to work for Westwood One Radio.
For the past 11 years, telling the story of Georgia Southern Athletics has been one of the great personal and professional honors of my life, Reed said. Not everyone can be an Eagle, but those that have shown the grit, toughness and discipline to do so will always hold a distinct place in my heart.
I am deeply appreciative and profoundly grateful for the opportunity to have represented this university and culture in continuing a long and proud tradition of Eagle athletics on the radio.
Eagle Nation I just hope you'll all know how much pride and passion we injected into every broadcast and piece of content we produced because you deserve to hear this story told with the highest level of respect for those that laid the foundation and the confidence that that standard of excellence will be upheld for generations to come.
To all of our incredible student-athletes, coaches and unwavering supporters of this program - past, present & future - I thank you. Wings Up, Eagle Nation!
Reed joined Georgia Southern in 2015 and spent the last decade serving as the radio play-by-play voice for Eagle football, men's basketball and baseball. In addition to his game-day responsibilities, Reed hosted coaches' shows, emceed major athletic events and played an instrumental role in promoting Georgia Southern Athletics through a variety of media and storytelling platforms.
Danny has been an outstanding ambassador for Georgia Southern Athletics and Eagle Nation for the last 11 years, said Director of Athletics Chris Davis. His voice became part of so many memorable moments in our history, but his impact went well beyond the broadcast booth. Through his passion, professionalism and commitment to telling the stories of our student-athletes, coaches and programs, Danny helped elevate the profile of Georgia Southern Athletics and strengthen our connection with Eagle Nation. We are grateful for everything he has done for our university and wish him continued success in his next chapter.
In his new job, Reed will be calling a national college football game of the week and will have a greater presence calling regular-season major men's college basketball with championship week coverage. He will now have the opportunity to call the first weekend of March Madness on the men's side and will continue to call the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight on the women's side.
Georgia Southern and its multimedia partner, Learfield, will conduct a national search to find the new Voice of the Eagles.
