Eagles collect third straight win; head to North Carolina for pair of matches this weekend
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern men's tennis collected its third straight win on Wednesday afternoon with a 4-2 victory over visiting North Alabama at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles improve to 8-6 on the year, while North Alabama falls to 9-8 after the first meeting between the two schools in program history. Georgia Southern hits the road for a pair of contests this weekend in North Carolina, first playing at Elon on Friday at 10 a.m.
Georgia Southern earned the doubles point from the Lions with a 6-1 win by Albert Saar and Albert Widell at No. 2 doubles, as well as a 6-3 win by Willy Mirarchi and Matthew Mitchell at No. 3 doubles.
The Eagles then won four of six first sets in singles to take charge of the match. Widell delivered the first singles match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Benjamin Meyers at No. 6 singles. UNA picked up a singles point at No. 3 singles, but then Willy Mirarchi notched a 6-2, 7-5 win over Samu Dominguez at No. 5 singles.
The Lions made it a 3-2 score with a win at No. 1 singles, then Gregoire Delattre clinched the victory for the Eagles with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Alberto Altur at No. 2 singles.
"I'm really proud of the guys and how they competed the whole way through," Georgia Southern head men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said. "North Alabama has been having a great stretch, they played in the NCAAs last year and won their conference. I respect what they do and hold them in a high regard. Just proud of how the guys came through, how they fought, and we're looking forward to putting it on the line again on Friday."
