Georgia Southern goes 2-0 on the weekend against Sun Belt foes; hosts UNA next on Wednesday
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern men's tennis notched its second straight win against a Sun Belt opponent with a 4-2 victory over Georgia State on Saturday at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles improve to 7-6 on the season with the victory, while Georgia State falls to 3-12. Georgia Southern will step back out of conference for its next match, hosting North Alabama on Wednesday, March 25, in a 1 p.m. contest at Wallis.
Georgia State took the early lead in the match with the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Eagles did get a win at No. 3 doubles as Willy Mirarchi and Matthew Mitchell notched a 6-1 victory.
In singles, the Eagles won five of six first sets to seize momentum. Albert Widell tied the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, then Albert Saar delivered a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles to give the Eagles the lead.
After the Panthers tied it back up with a win at No. 3 singles, the Eagles clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win from Gregoire Delattre at No. 2 singles, then a 6-3, 7-6 (6) win from Willy Mirarchi at No. 4 singles.
"Every match is important, but especially if we're playing someone in our conference, you're going to be seeing them again regardless if we play them in the tournament or not," Georgia Southern head men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said about the matches this weekend against Sun Belt foes. "It's about setting a tone. When you see us across the net again, what's the match going to be about and we want to send a message that if they see us again, it's going to be the toughest match they've had all year."
"I think we played a lot more composed in our singles," Coach Goodwin said about his team's singles play this weekend. "We allowed ourselves to work back in. I would like to get the doubles point but it gives me and the team confidence that we can put six tough points on the board whether we win or lose the doubles point."
