Georgia Southern begins Sun Belt play on Friday vs. James Madison
STATESBORO - Gardner-Webb men's tennis fought off a Georgia Southern singles comeback to edge the Eagles, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Runnin' Bulldogs moved to 10-3 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 5-6. Georgia Southern will next open up Sun Belt Conference action, hosting James Madison on Friday, March 20, at 10 a.m. at Wallis.
The crucial doubles point was taken by Gardner-Webb with identical 6-2 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
The Eagles and Runnin' Bulldogs each split the first sets of singles play, meaning that Georgia Southern had to turn a match around to have a chance to come away with the victory. Gardner-Webb got straight set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but the Eagles countered with a 6-2, 6-1 win by Willy Mirarchi at No. 6 singles; a 6-1, 7-5 win by Albert Widell at No. 5 singles and a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win by Davis Taylor at No. 4 singles.
At No. 1 singles, Alexandre Bergeron took a 6-1 win in the first set, but the Eagles' Albert Saar pushed the match to a third set with a 6-4 win in set number two. But Bergeron clinched the victory for the visitors with a 6-2 win in the third set.
